PYONGYANG CRESCENDO e-mail: info@icudocs.tv Hans
Hermans/Martin Maat, The Netherlands/North Korea, 2005
colour, video, 80/50 min. Original Language(s): English/German/Korean
Subtitles: English
In a country that some would describe as a member of the 'axis of evil,' music
is teaching isolated students a universal language. German conductor Alexander
Liebreich is the first European conductor who has been allowed to enter North
Korea to work with North Korean students. In May 2005, he was given 10 days to
teach a group of North Korean students how to conduct music they had never heard
before. Pyongyang Crescendo focuses on two of his students as they struggle to
master their pieces. Filmmakers seldom get the opportunity to film in North Korea,
and when they do they have to work under special conditions. Typically, the government
selects who is interviewed, and it stages most scenes for the cameras. Pyongyang
Crescendo is different. The filmmakers were able to shoot freely at the University
of Music and Dance in Pyongyang. Even when the pressure rose, with students failing
in rehearsals, the filmmakers were not hindered in any way -- a rare opportunity
in a country where imperfection is something to hide from outsiders.
COMRADES AND DREAMS Director Uli Gaulke producer:
Helge Albers
Movie theatre manager Han Yong Sil prides herself in showing films that address
pressing social problems...such as preventing irrigation damage. "We think
of the farmers and their harvest," she says with conviction. "That
is what we are here for." Plucky business partners Lassane, Luc and Zakaria
named their outdoor theatre in Burkina Faso the Emergence because they believe
every day allows you to emerge into greatness. They hope one day to emerge
into a bigger, indoor theatre, then expand throughout the country. Sunday school
teacher Penny lives in Big Piney, Wyoming and runs The Flick cinema, an integral
part of the small town's social life for generations. Meanwhile, in India,
Anup's hugely successful travelling tent theatre is met by mobs everywhere
it goes and turns away scores of people at every screening. This affectionate
ode to independent cinema owners the world over demonstrates the unifying and
universal power of movies, drawing us into the dreams, visions and character
of these very different individuals and their cultures in the way that only
great cinema can.

The serious flooding in the
DPRK has led to loss of life and hundreds of people left
without homes and food. We are very aware of the seriousness
of the situation and are doing what we can to help. If
you would also like to offer your support we can recommend
the Rotaract Club who deal directly with the North Koreans
and ensure that whatever is sent gets to the people who
need it most. They are currently raising funds to buy medicine.
If you would like more information please contact Randal

OTHER PROJECTS: Rotarians and private donors
from Shanghai have visited North Korea, in conjunction
with the Ministry
of Foreign Trade, to donate 140 wheelchairs and much needed
medical supplies and other goods. In response to the donor's
offer to provide additional support, the Ministry of Foreign
Trade has identified more than 4,000 people in need of
a wheelchair. From this has been born the “Thousand
Wheelchair Project”.
If you would like to donate and help us reach
the goal of 1,000 wheelchairs for the survivors of this
tragedy, and
thereby give them the gift of mobility, please contact: Tatiana
Ramirez,
